Holiday Cooking Safety Tips

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

November and December is the time of year where people come together to share meals and quality time together. This year has been quite different than others as gatherings are considerably smaller depending on your local guidelines. As a result, we may be seeing less experienced cooks in the kitchen- which in our industry leads to more kitchen related emergencies. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) holiday cooking accidents are the leading cause of home fires and injuries.

Let’s review the following tips to help ensure a safe and happy holiday;

  • Never leave cooking food unattended. If you must leave while frying, grilling or boiling turn off the appliance.
  • Check food regularly to and utilize a timer to remind yourself.
  • Keep small children away from hot surfaces.
  • Keep flammable items away from stoves, ovens and other heat sources to avoid accidental ignition.
  • Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
  • Clean cooking surfaces on a regular build up to prevent grease build-up which can ignite a fire.
  • Make sure you have access to a fire extinguisher should an emergency arise unexpectedly.
  • Make sure appliances are turned off completely when not in use. Leaving an over or stove on overnight can lead to serious ramifications.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working properly in case of an emergency.
