Summer Safety Tips to Prevent Fires

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Bright blue skies, cool pools, the scent of a freshly mowed lawn and barbecue…It’s definitely summertime! Kids are out of school and adults are getting ready to use some well-deserved vacation time. It’s a season synonymous with fun, freedom, and sunshine. Unfortunately, it is also a common time of year for emergency room visits and accidental fires.

July is the busiest time of year nationally for grill fires. It is also common for accidental house fires and injury due to the mishandling of fireworks.

There are plenty of things you can do to help protect your home and your family during the festivities. We want you to enjoy every minute of your summer. Follow some of these helpful tips to make sure your summer is both fun AND safe!

  • Only use your propane and charcoal grills outdoors. Never bring them indoors.
  • Keep your grill away from the exterior of your home. You don’t want it against railings, door frames, under eaves, or too near low hanging branches.
  • Be vigilant in keeping children and pets away from the grill and its general vicinity.
  • Never leave the grill unattended.
  • Be clean- remove fat build up and grease from grills, trays, and accessories.
  • Obey all local laws concerning firework usage.
  • Fireworks and alcohol do not mix.
  • Do NOT try to re-light a malfunctioning or “dud” firework.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of fire or to fully extinguish the ones that have malfunctioned.
  • Read all cautionary labels and instructions before lighting fireworks and always use them outside only.
